The Edwardsville YMCA, led by president and CEO Gary Niebur, is dedicated to enriching the lives of all individuals and families in the communities we serve through programs and services based on Christian principles that promote a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The YMCA’s core purpose is providing recreational and education facilities and programs and services to people of all ages, serving youth, families and people of all ages with their primary market area being the Edwardsville School District.

Edwardsville YMCA was chartered in 1949 as a storefront operation on Main Street in Edwardsville. Programs and services were held in various facilities in Edwardsville and throughout the area. The first YMCA facility was built on Esic Drive in 1968.

Starting from the storefront operation in 1949, with a hundred or so members, the YMCA has grown through the years to having over 7,000 memberships consisting of over 21,000 members. The current budget is $6,100,000 and the YMCA is the largest provider of part-time/seasonal employees in the Edwardsville area with over 375 part-time employees and full time staff of 19.

The YMCA has two facilities, the Esic Center and the Meyer Center, with a total of over 160,000 square feet with the Meyer Center being one of the largest YMCA’s in the country. The estimated yearly turnstile attendance exceeds 750,000 people.

Due to the continuing growth and demand for new programs and services the YMCA is in the process of developing a short term and long term master plan for facility expansion.

One of the primary goals of the organization is to provide membership and program services to those that need support and financial assistance in order to participate. In 2010, over $200,000 in fees were waived through the YMCA Financial Assistance program. The YMCA is the largest provider of childcare and school age childcare in the metro east area. In addition to having a great preschool program, over 600 children participate in the Summer Camp program. In addition, over 650 students participate in the before and after school Kid’s Network program in nine schools in the Edwardsville School District. The Kid’s Network program is a partnership with the Edwardsville School District and the YMCA, and students and parents, are grateful for the support of the School District.

The YMCA has been a member of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce for over 40 years.

The YMCA has been extremely fortunate to have great community support and with that support we have been able to provide two great facilities. But more important than the “bricks and mortar” are the hundreds of programs, for people of all ages, that they offer to members and non-members alike.
