Cash Mob Planned for 1PM Saturday at Olive Oils & More in Edwardsville

by Ed/Glen Chamber on March 21st, 2012

The Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce is holding its first cash mob event Saturday, March 24 in conjunction with National Cash Mob Day (www.cashmob.com). The cash mob is planned for 1pm Saturday at Olive Oils & More, located at 1063 South IL Route 157, Suite 6, in Edwardsville (behind Bella Milano).

“Last week I read an article about National Cash Mob Day and thought it would be great to bring a cash mob to the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area. This is such a unique way to garner support for local business, and it’s fun. I hope the community comes out this Saturday in a show of support for Olive Oils & More. It’s an opportunity to make a difference in the success of a local business,” said Cathy Hamilton, who serves on the Ed/Glen Chamber’s board of directors.

This inaugural event invites residents to come out in a show of support for a local business. As the week unfolds, announcements about the cash mob will be posted on the Ed/Glen Chamber’s social media platforms. Participants are encouraged to show up at a specific time and place and be prepared to spend $20 in the designated local retail venue.

“Changes in the economy have hit small businesses hard, making it more important than ever for them to receive support from their communities,” said Executive Director Lisa Smith.

The first cash mob was organized in August, 2011. A cash mob is similar to a flash mob, but instead of showing up at a location to sing or dance, a cash mob gathers at a local retail establishment to spend money. Both types of groups usually communicate upcoming events through social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter. The goal of a cash mob is to promote spending at independent, locally owned businesses, to infuse the local economy and maintain its strength.

There is more to a cash mob than just spending money. It is about helping a local business in need that has given time and resources to improve the community. The cash mob provides the business media coverage, which encourages more consumers to shop at the location. The ultimate goal is to transform cash mob participants into regular customers.

Smith said that if this event is successful, the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce may hold more cash mob events in the future.
